Coach Monica Lewis
I am a better coach because of CrossFit.
I never knew what I wanted to do when I grew up. I had my first real coaching job when my son, West, started playing Squirt Ice Hockey at age 9. The kids had great coaches on the ice, but no program to build their endurance off-ice. I volunteered. I found that coaching is a lot like parenting; you read the books, watch videos and talk to other parents (in this case, coaches), but you don’t get a feel for it until you start doing it. I put my best, most functional workout plan on paper, then ended up scrapping it at the last minute. We found ourselves playing dodge ball, freeze tag and “sharks and minnows”. Being flexible and making it FUN was the key to keeping the kids moving and, ultimately, keeps my adult clients coming back for more. FUN!
I got into CrossFit the same way a lot of other people did; I took a class taught by some friends and I was amazed at the total body exhaustion at the end of the WOD, where you think you are going to die, but you keep on going until “time” is called. Then you recover and want to do more, and the more you do the stronger you get, and change your body and health and eating habits for the better. I am a better coach because of CrossFit.
